| 10-5-08 Open Source I recently purchased a new desktop workhorse for my own projects. Now, laptops from work have been the main platform for productivity in the past few years, but this was to be a dedicated, LEGAL workstation for the home office. As such, it is loaded with open source and free software. It goes without saying (hopefully) that tousands of dollars were saved and I'm not losing any productivity time or sleep wondering if my software will be obsolete soon and I'll have to spring an arm and a leg for the new versions. I can't reccomend these pieces of software enough: General Productivity: Firefox - If u r on the web and don't know what this is u've been living under a virtual rock. Go get it! Also installed the following plugins for Firefox: FireFTP, Stumbleupon, VLC Player - plays just about any video file Open Office - MS Office alternative that rocks Creative Process: Audacity - Audio recording/management GIMP - image manipulation along the lines of Photoshop Blender - fully featured 3D software... way more awesome than I remember it a few years ago Kompozer - WYSIWYG web page editor Inkscape - vector graphics Development: Visual C# Express ConTEXT - text editor |
